linux reboot after grub

hi , i'm a total linux noob, and i did something wrong

the computer i'm trying to run linux on is a 266 mhz with 64mb ram
3 gb hard disk, and a s3 trio64 v2/dx card
yet this computer doesn't support cd boot, and my floppy disk is broken...
i tried replacing it with another floppy yet i get the same error : 40 disk fail

but that's not what i'm worried about
i just changed the hard disk to another computer which does support cd boot , and to reduce errors, i replaced that computers geforce 4mx 440 with the s3 trio64 ... so i wouldn't need to reconfigure x on the other computer (or so i thought)

now, on the cd bootable computer linux works (gnome)
but when i try it on the other pc (changing disk and gr card) it just reboots after the grub boot screen (my only option there is linux, no failsave etc.. like mandrake)

is there any way i chould reconfigure x from that grub screen (it's a graphical screen, with options like typing 'e' for editing currently selected bootloader, 'c' for command, and 'a' for ? i forgot )

or do you think there's another problem instead of x (i also used the same mouse, and a screen with +- the same hrz range)

I think it has to do with something else other than X. Please elaborate: You boot, enter grub, and ... ? Error messages?

No messages? Does the bios screen come up again? Please elaborate on the hardware changes you made.

ok so , everything looks the same on second reboot, bios screen, disk detection etc ... then it goes to grub and you know the rest

for hardware changes... hmm err, i practically changed everything except graphix card, and mouse (and of course hard disk)
maybe that wasn't a very smart thing to do
yet i think it isn't a very hard problem to solve, probably reconfige something , bit as i said before, i'm a total linux noob (this is the first time a thy to install it)
btw my version is red hat 9 , downloaded from site, just to get to know it
