Linux processor compatiblity

Hi. I'm getting ready to build my own computer, and I would like to know if there are any mainstream processors I should stay away from. I'm considering getting a processor in the AMD Athlon 64 series. Can linux handle an Athlon 64? What about a dual core AMD Athlon 64 X2? Thanks.

I have a AMD linux box, not athlon 64 though. And I just loaded a intell dual core dell box with RHEL and it is noticibly faster. Pretty cool.
So, if I was a betting man I'd bet it would work, sorry I can't tell you for sure.

I have two Linux systems, running just fine, on Athlon 64 processors. I don't see any reason why the X2 processors would cause any problems, but I'm just speculating...

The answer is yes.

If you want a native x86_64 (64 bit) install, please choose a distro that supports it.

x86_64/amd64 is supported by a number of distros, including Gentoo and Ubuntu.
