linux on asus a7v8x motherboard
 

Would some one please let me know if linux can be installed on asus a7v8x mother board which has a builtin sound,vga and lan card, if so which version of linux can be installed. I am looking at buying a AMD hardware which supports Linux.

I should have been specific about my question, will RedHat Linux work on ASUS A7V8X, ASUS A7V8X-X is another model, it is not same as ASUS A7V8X

Look at my Hardware signature. I have an asus a7v8x motherboard and an athlon 2500+ AMD cpu. Linux works great on it. Fedora core 2 supports everything out of the box. Fedora core 1 had some problems with the sound card. But Fedora 2 works out everything.

I suggest Fedora core 2.

The Nforce2 chipset is wonderful, IMHO. If you would like to have four DIMMs instead of 3, Gigabyte has the GA 7N400-L The memory is dual channel, so you are better off to get 2X256 instead of 1x512mB. 512mB is pretty cheap, so if you need 2gB, the GA board can use 4X512 while most others cannot. If you use Linux, you can select software RAID at installation and use two harddrives on two IDE cables. In RAID 1, this sytem will be able to read two files at once and stuff loads twice as fast. Neat, eh?

Industry seems to feel that 64 bit systems are wonderful, but they are too expensive now. This mobo and a 2500 or better will rock you for ten years and it has great performance for the price. I built a system using Nforce2 last year. Look for my report on the installation and performance:report.pdf. From page 9 there is a performance report. With 7 users active simultaneously and running several servers, we used only 4% of the cpu! From page 11, there is information on the performance of the RAID array. It shows a factor of 2 speedup when two files are read at once. Since that report, I have started using JFS filesystems and 2.6 kernels for even better performance.
