Linux on ACER Aspire 1681WLMi Notebook

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...115-139&depa=0

Interested in knowing if anyone has had any luck with getting linux installed on this machine. Anyone have general ACER experiance? It a toss between this and an IBM ThinkPad R40.. I know the IBM is the most linux friendly laptop company around.. but for the same price i get 512 compared to 256 and 64 megs of ATI 9700 video ram compared to 32. also the screen is a WXGA compared to just an XGA. So if I can get linux on this beast.. that would be a better deal for me. Plus hard drive is bigger.

as compared to

Thanks for your help!

Thats a slick little laptop. There are two problems I forsee. Drivers for the ATI based card might be a pain to find. There are binary drivers for higher ended cards (like this one) but i've read a lot of horror stories about them. Another point.... since its a Pentium M, on the winxp it comes with, you'll get at least 3 hours of battery life at idle or low consumption states. Im not 100% sure if the linux acpi support will get comparable battery life. That is something I'm curious about, so if anyone has a Pentium M laptop, please post your battery life expectencies, please.

On my Acer travelmate 430 everything worked OK (even thing I didn't even hope for, like WiFi and IrDa).
I didn't check if 3d acceleration worked, I only tried a live cd distro. Maybe you could do that too.

I just got a total spec sheet from ACER.. what good customer service they have! Very friendly and eager to help! Looks like everthing will work great, exept the ATI and perhaps battery life? Anyway xig.com is working on a mobile accelerated driver for the ATI MOBILE line its pay but its not that much.. the LX series. Its basically an X server. replaces XFree or Xorg...

Thumbs up Acer 1681

I've installed a linux mandrake 10 on a 1681 yesterday :-)

the good :
Wide screen
Very fast
Lightweight
No problem with partitionning.

the bad :
No acpi. The 1'st reboot hang on acpi. I have to boot the mdk cd in rescue mode and add 'acpi=ht' in lilo.conf, then restore lilo boot.
So, the notepad don't just down, you must press the button for 8 sec for it :-) And no sleep or hibernate of course.
It seem to be a pain to make that work !
Centrino wifi not detected.
Audio volume adjust with keyboard.

The 'not so bad' :
I've tried the ati linux driver (for 'made by ati cards'), and ... it works. After some tweaks to compile the new kernel module, etc... But anything impossible. Just read the help files from ati.

I own a thinkpad R40. Everything is supported under Linux, apm and hibernate also.. But the video card is simplest.

So, you choose :-)
