I currently trying to install Linux on a Sun Ultra Sparc10 it has a UltraSparcII i 333MHz CPU with 128Mb RAM. When I boot I type in Stop - A then it will show me a OK prompt. I then typed boot cdrom with my linux distribution it then will not boot the cd. The error I receive is the following:
Bad magic number in disk label
Canīt open disk label package
canīt open boot device
The linux distribution I tried was RH 7.2 ,7.0 and Suse 7.3 with no success.
Yeah he has to be... Redhat never made a Sparc release for 7.0 and 7.2, actually they stopped way back with 6.2. SuSe did release a sparc 7.3, which you can download from:
That and Debian and the closest to current Sparc release distros aside from the Aurora and Splack projects, which are third party re-portings of Redhat and Slackware to the sparc platform, respectively.
I've been running SuSe 7.3 on an Ultra 5 for about 6 months and Debian 3 on an old SS10 for a few weeks.
Ahh.. I finally got a good deal on some old Sparc's to play around with. Not very powerful machines but will do until one day I can get a more powerful one. Got a SunSparc Station 20 and 10 for about 35 bucks. Not totally for sure what condition they are in, but I guess they'll keep me busy though..
Hey Trick, if you end up with any extra RAM... my ss10 has a whopping 32MB! and we're talking RISC processing here, where everything and its mother gets paged. Oh my it chugs!
mail me about the specs when you get the change to pop 'em.

Yeah, I got mine off ebay, the guy selling had no idea what the specs were on them, so I'll definitely let ya know when I do get them what thier specs are and such..
Hey Trick, did you get a W13J(???) to HDA-15 adapter yet, or a Sun Monitor, also gotta remember a Type 5/6 keyboard and mouse. Also, if you go the adapter route... your probably going to have to play a big game of the monitor dance before you find one that can handle the ranges of the card.
