linux installation - h/w requirements

What are the required h/w for installing linux.

I have P3 600MHz, 64 MB system.

Will that do, or what configuration (Laptop and PC) should I buy?
What it will cost?

Suggestions please.

That's fine for a command-line system. For a desktop, any machine with 256MB or more RAM is OK.

When buying new hardware the only limitation is that certain models of graphics cards, wireless, and internal modems can't be fully supported, so either won't work, or require additional software to function correctly. Intel have a policy of supporting Linux, so Intel graphics and wireless hardware are always good choices.

I have a 500mhz with 512mb ram and a 40GB hard drive that is running SuSE 10.0 with KDE ok. It isn't fast, but is ok for card games, internet access, and OpenOffice. I wouldn't want to do anything graphic intensive, or that requires a lot of number crunching, but for simple stuff, it works ok.

There are quite a few distros that are much more light weight, like Puppy linux, or DSL. You might try one of those. And look into upgrading the memory. Linux is a good way to get a couple of extra years out of old hardware.
