Linux Freeze on Asus A6Vm

I have a problem on my laptop Asus A6Vm: it freeze. The problem is that I can't repeate it and it happens randomly.
Sametimes the computer works for day withouth any problem, other times it crash just after the boot processes.
When it freeze the caps lock key does not turn on the light when pressed.

I would like you to help me to find the cause and, if it's a kernel problem, report it to the kernel mailing list or whereever it has to go.

I can say that this problem shown on several kernel version and distribution:
mepis 6.5 - 2.6.15
mepis 7.0 - 2.6.22
debian etch - 2.6.18
debian etch - 2.6.23 compiled by me
ubuntu 7.10 - 2.6 (I don't remember).

On the debian etch I'm not using nvidia module so I exlude it to be the cause.

Here is my lspci.

Try lavalite from xscreensaver package.. And pass it big value for resolution. Will load both your CPU and GPU. You can also try menger - it will create lots of polygons to load just GPU.. If the latter hangs your system quickly, probably the problem is with nVidia drivers - especially if you use proprietary ones.

The first thing that I would try to eliminate would be memory errors. For that, you should use memtest86 and leave it running for an extended period as this seems to be an intermittant problem. There are many other possible issues, but memory is not one of the more likely ones, but it is one you will want to eliminate first in case memory issues cause spurious reports from other tests.

I suspect that you will never get to the stage that this is a 'report to the kernel bug list' issue: there is so much to eliminate first that it is unlikely you would get that far.

Last night I left the computer doing the memory test for more that 9 hours. It did 12 passes test.
Bofore run the memory test, I plaied Nexuiz with hight details, 1280x800 resolution, 32 bit per pixel without any problem (video card is a geforce go 7300). The nvidia driver (propietary) are not the latest verion but the one given actualy with mepis 7.0 (100.14.19-1).

Any other suggestion?

PS: I won 2 death matches, Nexuiz is great.

I would be looking at the motherboard and the power supply regulation. With a laptop, could have to do with a bad battery combined with bad or failing regulation.

Translation: probably a serious and expensive problem. Not a kernel problem.

One common test also: monitor contents of /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature (possibly you will need to modprobe thermal for this node to exist). Sometimes (with dying/stuck fans) overheating occurs, irregularly of course, and it causes processor self-defense to halt everything.

This morning I shouted down the laptop after few days that it was always on without freezing. Let see if it will do it again. I remember that sametimes it has forzen just 1 -2 minutes after I turned it on.
I don't think can be a termal problem also because I just did 9 hours of memory test where the processor and the fan were at the maximun.
The test should have failed or worse, dameged my hardware.
One more: mepis use klaptop (powersaved) and if the temperature goes hight I get advised by a message (it didn't happen), it's stable around 45 and 55-57 when I do samething like encoding divx.

I will inform you if it will freeze again and in wich occasion.

Bye.
