Linux External Hard Drive PROBLEMS

Hi, I have always used windows and linux (redhat 9.0) on the same Internal HD. Im not an expert so i still consider myself a noob on linux (bear with me).
I bought a new laptop some weeks ago and havent installed linux on it. I bought a Maxtor 80GB external hard drive. I decided to install Fedore Core 3... Downloaded, Burned It as DVD, etc and ready i thought.
Well my problem is that im trying to install fedora on the external HD but its not detected it only detectes my Internal HD already tryed the doscsi command on boot:
my bios does support USB booting so this aint a problem could somebody help me out here and tell me what else could I do please be specific how I said still a noob on linux. :newbie:

I forgot to mention on doscsi the message I get is
COULD NOT FIND KERNEL IMAGE: doscsi
and when loading the linux installer the USB storage device IS detected but it does not appear when selecting the partition where i want it installed.

Two things you need to do.
1. Enable USB boot in your BIOS
2. Make sure it checks USB _BEFORE_ internal hard drive for a boot sector.

You might also need to make sure you have installed either grub or lilo on the external HD's master boot record. Do the first two things however and then see how you go.

I've tried the link snecklifter mentioned. followed the steps mentioned there. everything went on fine till the grub editing thing. created the file etc. but when rebooting I get an error file can not be found. and i've searched for it, made lots of modifications to grub.conf..... testing etc till I got it and made linux run from my External HD with no problems. I took me lot of time really but it is posible.
