Linux embedded NAS

Greetings, I'm looking for a NAS to be a backup server... All I can find are XP or 2003 embedded OS's?? Even Lacie is using embedded XP and IOmega is using 2003 storage server... All my googles produce either Real High End or no-namers... in which I would look for recomendations/referrals...

You would think that Linux would be cheaper, and a no brainer for NAS.

I would like to remain a pure clean lifesytle, and not use m$, at all!

Anyone using any? or know of any?

Thanks

Some of the older quantum / snap servers are linux based (SNAP OS anyway) and no M$ in sight. the new stuff tends to be M$ but you could probably pick up a used one of ebay (recently sold a Dell 705N myself which is how I know about the quantum ones) You could try and build one yourself with a bootable knoppix cd and a bunch of HDD configured how you like with RAID etc and use NFS exports or smb to share stuff. Haven't yet done this myself but I am thinking of it, or I may try a bootable USB pen drive so it makes changing configurations easier... don't know yet. Anyway, I am rambling.
Hope this helps,
David.
