linux doesn't read compact flash

i am trying to copy an image over to a compact flash module. this module is connected to my secondary IDE as a master. so this should be /dev/hdd to linux. however, linux(mandrake 9.0) will not boot(hangs after login prompt) when i have the card in the module holder (btw, the module holder is just a passthrough, to go from the compact flash connection to the standard IDE 40-pin connection). however, when i eject the card after the BIOS, and yes the BIOS recognizes the card as it should, linux will boot and /dev/hdc is there. however, the module is not in the holder. so i place the module back into the holder, and try a "dd" to copy the image, says its records+in/out, but nothing was transfered, the image is not on the flash module. i've tried switching over to the primary IDE and swapping master/slave, can't think of anything else. any help would be appreciated. sorry about the blogged post. thx.
