I'm sorry for posting another ipod thread, but I have not been able to find anything about my problem anywhere.
So I have this new Shuffle. When I plug it in, absolutely nothing happens. I'm not talking about mounting, but about my PC not recognizing there is anything plugged it at all.
There is nothing resembling /dev/sd[x] or /dev/ub[x] at all anywhere.
I run Ubuntu Edgy 64 bit.
The USB socket is fine. I can use a mouse or joystick in there no problem.
The ipod flashes up when I connect it at it should. (saying it can charge)
I plugged the into a friends Win2K machine briefly and it was a unrecognized USB device there.
Do I have to format it on a windows machine before Linux can even notice the device? Sounds unlikely to me.
Here is a cat of my /dev/bus/usb/devices
[ 19:31:49 ][ /dev/bus/usb ]> cat devices
Ok, I kept en eye on /var/log/messages when plugging and unplugging my mouse and joystick. They are listed.

Whenever I plug or unplug my shuffle, there is no activety at all in /var/log/messages.
I give up for now. I will setup Itunes on the Win2K box and setup the Ipod there, then try again on my own machine.
Xandros linux 4.0 supports your ipod shuffle. Xandros linux is as close to windows XP as you can get in a linux distro. It's hardware support is extensive.
check out hardware this distro supports.
