Linux defaults to motherboard VGA instead of using GTX 8800

I've been using my motherboard's VGA output for my display but its way too slow, to the point that I can't stream video in greater than 720p. So I got a GTX 8800. I can use it to view the BIOS and it displays Grub fine. But when I try to boot into linux (Debian 10) it switches the output to the motherboard's VGA. It displays two error messages on the monitor from the GPU with a blinking keyboard cursor:

[ 3.319654] ERST: Failed to get Error Log Address Range.
[ 3.427483] APEI: Can not request [mem 0xcff7d550-0xcff7d5a3] for APEI BERT registers

These can be found in dmesg as well, but I don't think they're related to the problem because these same errors present even when the GPU is not installed.

When the GPU is not installed I can use startx to start KDE, but if the GPU is installed I get an error from Xorg. Getting the DE to work is also important but I suppose that for right now I really just want to know why its refusing to use by GPU even for a basic terminal.

Have you installed the proper driver for your new graphics card?

2 things.

Some bios settings may need a force....to move off IGD, onboard gfx etc and
you do not appear to have changed your xorg file so it is using the old card specs.

try
https://askubuntu.com/questions/2177...xorg-conf-file

Be aware that your repo may only be set up for free and not non-free or contrib.
So I am not sure if your card needs non-free firmware.

It should still give you the opensource nvidia driver tho.....after you create a new xorg.
Note you can not do this on a current desktop, that is why you have to be at console.

Each start of Xorg results in a diagnostic log file. Normally it is /var/log/Xorg.0.log. For some installations it is found as ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log instead. It's possible also to find the number in the filename is something other than "0". So that we can see it, please do cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | pastebinit and provide the resulting URL here.

I agree the problem might be solved by a BIOS setting change.

No "installation" of a proper driver, nor firmware, is required for optimal Xorg operation with GPUs of OP's ilk. Appropriate graphics drivers for most GPUs are included by default in a standard or KDE Debian installation. e.g.
Code:
# dpkg -l | egrep 'firmware|g-video'

In theory it should work with the nouveau driver, but that card is 15 years old.

^ correct.
My experience with nouveau was that, the older the card, the more likely it is to glitch, and the less features are supported.
OP might need the (suitable, old) proprietary nvidia driver. <= probably not an option anymore.

Also, that card is likely less capable than most CPU-integrated GPUs.
If it doesn't support decoding of some video codec you might well run into problems (e.g. HEVC/x265 - definitely not supported by that card).
That also goes for gaming and OpenGL versions.

Obviously the general slowness of the system also depends on how powerful the CPU is.

This would be the Nvidia driver for that card,
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driv...x/156163/en-us
Installation instructions can be found under the heading, "Additional Information" at the above link. Under that same heading you can find detailed installation instructions by clicking on "README."

It does not. It does not support h264 either - 8800GTX is based on G80, which pre-dates the inclusion of (full) hardware decoding in nvidia cards by a few months (the later G8x cards, like the 8400GS mentioned above, actually do support h264, and have some partial support for VC-1 - the 8800GTX inherits its video pipeline from the 7800 GTX and has partial h264 support at best). HEVC/h265/AV-1/vp9/etc are completely off the table. Any Intel IGP from around 2010, or newer, or AMD APU from around the same time, will be superior to that card for video/multimedia support (assuming a primarily h264/VC-1/etc 'HD' world). If you need more modern codec support ('4K world' like h265/HEVC/etc) it may be time to consider an upgrade overall.

FWIW: I've had noveau running fine on Ubuntu 20.04 on a G84GL (the Quadro-badged variant of the 8600GT), even running some 3D applications (supertuxkart and gl_gears) but performance was not awesome. From recollection, it more or less 'just worked' on boot - I didn't have to manually blacklist or load any modules. My advice here would be to check the system BIOS/UEFI before messing with scattershot terminal commands - you likely need to set the 8800GTX as the 'primary' display and/or disable an IGP as others have said.

When you're running the machine as-is right now (X needs to be running), what is the output of:
Code:
xrandr --listproviders
and, if you have it installed,
Code:
inxi -G
