Linux Crashes When Mounting /Floppy
 

Hi!

I have this problem both in Linux Mandrake 9.1 and in Linux Debian.

Every time I try to mount my floppy drive, Linux crashes.
The drive works just fine in Windows or Dos. I have no idea why this happens nor how to fix this.
Can anyone help me?

but what exactly happens whem you mount the disk? how do you mount the disk?
Maybe you could also post your fstab(/etc/fstab).

In this moment i'm not at home, but what happens is like this:

I try to mount the floppy doing:

mount /floppy

the led in the floppy drive lightens and everything freezes.

I can't logout, change the tty, nor restart.
The only option is reboot manually.
I have an Asus P4s8x-x motherboard with a Pentium4 2400 processor.
I changed the drive and the problem remains.

This is what happens in Debian.
Mandrake automatically mounts the floppy drive so when I try to access it in graphical mode (MsWindows style), the computer crashes, just like before.

This is what happens. This night I'll post the fstab.

I installed a new CD drive on this rig when I was building it. I had the exact same problem. I also had trouble with the CD drive though. I swapped the CD drive for another and all was well. The floppy has worked flawlessly ever since. I never really was able to find out why this happened.

Can you swap the drive from another system and see if it does the same thing? I was new at Linux at the time and took the easy way out. I think it is a conflict somewhere in the hardware, at least in my case.

This may not help solve your problem, but it may help you eliminate something else. Oh, it did install fine and all from the CD. As soon as I boot into Linux it was a nightmare.

Just something to think about. You may also want to check the DMA settings on that drive. I have read where some have to cut off DMA for the CD drives. That may help. :scratch:
