I'm having a couple of problems running college linux (based on slack ware), kernel version 2.4.20 on my old 266 petium laptop. First, I can't seem to get any sound. I'm not sure how to configure my soundcard. I know its a Yamaha YM715 (old piece of crap), 16 bit sound card. I don't think it is an ISA card because when I was running config it said no ISA cards found. When I boot up linux it says there is a problem with dev/dsp, which I know has something to do with the sound, and the file is in the directory but it won't let me run the file, even as root, and there is no text in it when I open it with vi and it tells me that its not a file, and when I try to cd dsp to see if it is a directory, it says it isn't a directory either?
Also, my pc ethernet card won't work. I'm not really sure how to configure it either. I think it's a pretty common card(Link sys pcm100). When I type ./cardctl ident, all it says is no product info available for socket 1 and 2.
I can't get my dvd rom drive to mount either. When linux loads up, it seems to recognize it's presence, but I can't access it once I'm finished booting. Does anybody have any help or suggestions?
