Linux Compatible MP3 Player

Hey all,

I have successully gotten Suse 10.0 installed and running beautifully on my home PC (yeah for me! :D ). Having decided to dump Windows for linux, and my old flash-based MP3 player having died recently, I am now in the market for a new MP3 player.

But I want to make sure it will work well with my Linux box where all my music is now stored. I have searched the forums here, but most of the posted seemed to be talking about flash-based players that only offer up to 1GB or so max. I want something with at least 20GB or more (60-80 would rock!).

Cost is not a big issue, I just want something that will work as seamlessly as possible and as easily as possible (I am still a bit of a :newbie: , but learning more every day). I am open to any and all suggestions on this one. Thanks in advance!!

iAudio and iRiver mp3 players work well. They require no dodgy manufacturer-supplie drivers, instead they show up just as removable storage does (using usb-storage) and they use the well documented FAT32 filesystem.

I have iAudio M3 (hard drive) and have bought an iAudio 5 (flash) for my girlfriend. Both work very well both for music and for use as temporary backups - the M3 takes 40GB so it's very usable. A friend of mine often comes over and transfers files using his iRiver 20GB hard drive based player. It works as expected too, no problems there either.

This is using Debian/Ubuntu and Gentoo.

Well, of course ipods work in linux. My 5Gb Creative Zen Micro works great, and it even has an FM tuner. Good luck.

I can personally vouch for the iPod working. The only thing that it can't do is transfer photos, but that's software implementation stuff, not lack of support.

Well I think I am going to get one of the 60GB Video iPods (birthday is coming up). Is it safe to assume then that getting music on it won't be an issue? Also, has anyone had any success or difficulties getting videos on them? I am not too worried about photos, as I don't expect to use that part too much. Thanks again for everyone's input!

gtkpod is what I use for music transfer. Look into handbrake for DVD ripping, and the newest version of gtkpod does video transfer as well. If you go here, it describes how I did it on my 30GB.
