I run SuSE Linux 9.2. I have successfully used an Epson C86 inkjet printer with it - but the printer head is now permanently clogged, and I need a new printer. Epson no longer make the C86.
Does anyone know if the Epson D88 injet
printer will work on Linux ??? - I have been unable to find out from Epson themselves.

Reason: add tag "Answer"
before you ditch that printer you can try to clean the print head with alcohol. You will probably have to disassemble the printer to get to the head. I have done this in the past when I saw streak and clogs and worked like new afterwards. Just be carefull and dont try to force anything.
Distribution: Redhat 9, then Fedora Core 2, Suse 10.0, 10.2 now 11.3

Hi Everyone,
Same issue.
I am running suse 10.0. My old printer an Epson Stylus C20UX worked out of the box and has worked with all the distributions I have used. It has been dying for sometime, but finally I think it has given up the fight.
I am in the UK I am looking to buy an Epson printer which will work out of the box with linux. I want to buy epson as the replacement cartridges are not to expensive.
I have been to linuxprinting.org, but none of the printers seem to be that new, so are no longer available in the shops. I have typed in a lot of the ones from the shops, but most are incompatible (paperweights) or mostly. Being rather feeble minded when it comes to linux it would be better if it was just something I plugged in.
The 'mostly' ones appear to need drivers, I have yet to download and install anything sucessfully in my two years of using linux. So I dread spending my last pennies on something I can't get to work.
Please let me know what printer you are using, if you bought it in 2006. Did you have to tweak it? As I no longer have a working printer I will consider other makes. I have used HP before, but found the cartridges expensive. Canon cartridges are also reasonably priced.
Since my original post, I now have two computers, running
SuSE 9.2 and 10.1.
I am successfully using Epson D88 inkjet printers on
each system - and they work !! But I have to pretend that
it is an Epson C86 !!
I think it is worth a try.

Hi Michael
Thank you for your response Now that is a printer I have seen around. A local shop is selling it and I think I saw it in PC World. I am glad you are now sorted.
I presume you just chose C86 during set up and it worked?
Before I spend my pennies anyone else with any other suggestions?
When installing the printers under both SuSE9.2 and SuSE10.1, the Epson d88 was not listed during my printer set-up. I tried several, and found that installing the D88 as a C86 worked.
That was 6 months ago: if you don't have any better suggestions, I would go for the D88.
Michael
I have just seen in the new issue of Linux Format Magazine,
Issue 89, Feb 2007, the following website for checking if
a printer is supported: www.linuxprinting.org
Happy printing (my Epson D88 still working, masquarading
as a C86.

Hi again,
The linuxprinting.org site seems to be somewhat behind. When I have checked printers that are in the shops now they are not listed. When I check printers listed at the site no one no longer sells them, so I haven't found it much use.
