linux compatibility mode
 

Tried for some months to install Linux on HP Pavilion dv2700 with AMD Turion 64 X2-TL64 and Nvidia GeForce 7150M with no usable results. After loading, the display is split in numerous parts and I can not do anything. Repeating the installation in compatibility mode, the display is ok but I can not do much. Read on the web that the Nvidia in the laptop is problematic. Some suggested that my ISO was not correct but it works ok on other machines. There is a nvidia .run driver on line, could I run it on the laptop and how on when I am in compatibility mode if that can be done. Help would be most welcomed, thank you

if you have an nvidia .run file you need to know, there is a documentation on the nvidia site. Where is it from? (and exactly which one?)

I have read the posts regarding nvidia and hp pavilion dv2700, sorry to say I could not do anything with that. Can we do some mods while on the machine in compatibility mode ?
Had Win7 on there but it was taken off with the installation of Linux after numerous tries with it still on. Your help will be appreciated

Would be nice to give more details, what did you try exactly and how. (what did you set/configure/modify, what's happened...)

what exactly are you trying to install?
and at what point do you get "the display is split in numerous parts"? right after booting, or later on?

some distros might automatically recognize a tricky graphics setup and activate the fallback driver.
some distros load desktops that do not work with a fallback driver.

you can also try to add the "nomodeset" option (without quotes) to your kernel command line (in grub: 'e' to edit).

not sure what you mean by "not much"?
anyhow, this is what you need.
now you need to figure out how to make the card work, and probably install the proprietary driver.

I will try again to install the driver while in compatibility mode because that is the only way I can get a correct screen - thank you very much

I am trying to install Mint from a CD

and at what point do you get "the display is split in numerous parts"? : right after booting, It loads the CD than asks for a mint login on two screens,what should I do then ? doing nothing it loads again and 3 screens come up showing Computer, home and install Linux Mint , choosing instALL linux mint on one of the 3 screens shows Create new folder, create new document, ask Desklets etc..choosing new folder and it returns to the 3 screens as above with Computer, Home and Install.

the only way I can get a normal display is when I load Mint in compatability mode

then on there, at first it says Linux Mint Serena 18.1 tty and Mint login: Mint login, if I type something it freezes that I shut down and boot again. Then a nice backdrop appears press F1 to select a User name Pressing F1 and it does not respond and up top says User mint will login in 2 seconds but nothing happens...

is that a text-only login?
on black background?
and you enter your password, but no text shows up?
that is how it is supposed to be.
have you tried entering it blindly?

Sorry , first I dont know what password to use since I never got to a screen asking for a password when trying to install from CD

Maybe its time to quit the installation trials and revert the thing to Win7 !

when you enter a password usually nothing happens. Nothing written, nothing changes - just only when you press enter.

Maybe that's the best solution alround.
