Linux compatable ata card?
 

I'm looking to buy a ata card that will be compatible with Fedora. I already bought the HighPoint Rocket100 which is stated as being compatible with linux but turns out doesn't work with any recent distro. I believe their drivers for this card are proprietary and havn't been updated for some time. So can anyone recommend a good pci ata card. My requirements are that it be cheap, and have at least two channels. I'm not to worried about hardware raid because I was just going to do a software raid with linux.

Try a Promise TX2000. Cheap, ATA133 raid card.

We use one of those on our mail server and it works well. Promise has a variety of drivers for various flavours of Linux, and they supply source code.

Do you know if the drivers are compiled in the defualt linux kernal or do you have to compile the source your self?

That's likely to depend on your distribution. Chances are a recent one like Slack 10 will have the driver already, but the binaries are on the Promise website. If you're on Fedora you should be fine, that card has been around for a couple of years at least.
