linux can't read printer

I have linux 2.6.10-5-386 from the Ubuntu distribution running on my PC. It runs beautifully, but neither the KDE or Gnome desktop printer utility finds the printer. The printer database does not include the Lexmark X6170 I have connected to my computer with a usb cable. How can I get the printer working with my system? Any solid advice would be much appreciated.

Go on linuxprinting.org, you will get some information about printing under linux.
But I think that you printer is not supported there.
Have fun!

Unfortunately, Lexmark is one of the worst when it comes to support for Linux. However, they do offer a developer kit so that you can write your own driver, if that's any help:

I have found that hp and epson printers are well supported in Linux. If buying a printer in the future, they are worth considering.

I saw the developers area for Lexmark, but the developers kit doesn't support my printer. I'm new to this so I have to take a little time and do some reading to figure out if I can use the developers kit.

Thanks

You could try the driver for the Z600 series but I'm not sure it will do anything for you:

I actually went to the lexmark site but could not download the software. Every time I tried to download my system would block it out. Can't figure it out yet. I sent lexmark support an email about it and I'm waiting for a reply.
