Linux and modems

I have Redhat 8.0. It does not automatically detect my modem. Am I screwed? Is there something I can do? What?

Well if you give us the type of modem you have, that always helps cause I bet 99.99999999999999% of us can claim we are not psychic!

Also moving to the hardware forum, where hardware questions are more suitable.
