Linux and Broadband in the UK

Hello,

I am currently running Suse 9.2 KDE and am still on dial-up, I am looking at a deal my ISP is doing to move to broadband which is only £1 dearer than what Im paying now which seems cool, trouble is they have said that although I can get it I will not get any technical support or any help to get it working on my computer as I am a linux user and dont have windows attal.
Also they have said that there will be a one year contract and I will be held to it wether I can get it working or not, so I guess I just wanted to ask some opinions of using broadband on Linux.

I dont mind getting it and even having no technical support as long as it works well and I can get it up and running with no real hassle.

The ISP is Telewest Broadband from the UK, if anyone also has any knowledge of running them as a BB ISP on Linux that would be cool too.

They said they will fit the line and provide the modem but then Im on my own after that.

I was gonna go for the 512k service but I hear it is being upgraded to 2mb soon so it would be a big jump for me from 56k!!! Just want to check there will be no problems hooking it up, and if there is that they can be sorted easily.

Thanks for all opinions and help

I don't know about their dial-up but about Telewest BB: I haven't used it with Linux, but you can connect the modem to your machine via Ethernet so I would imagine you won't have many problems connecting with Linux. Either that or you can connect the modem to a router and then connect your machine to that via Ethernet. Either way should work fine, though. If you don't have a network card, they're pretty cheap nowadays.

Telewest is cable. you'll get given a modem with an ethernet port on it. You will have to literally do *nothing* to make it work. Like my NTL connection, it should just be a bog standard ethernet connection off the the internet. They might have some annoying registration address to go to, but that shouldn't be a problem either. Personally I just call NTL and moan at them till they just flip the switch their end.

I have Telewest Broadband and have zero problems using Linux with it

All you have to do is register the MAC address of your NIC with Telewest, which you can do online, then the rest should be straight forward

I personally use a router because I have 4 machines on my LAN this is'nt necessary although it does provide a good firewall

Need any more info just ask

Pete

you're impressed by 2mb? you'll probably be able to get a full ADSL2+ 24mbps service by the end of the year...
