I had the same issue and installing the kernel source package closest to the kernel I was running fixed the issue.
To know the kernel you're running
Code:
uname -r
Try installing the source package from a GUI package manager (eg: Synaptic), it' s much easier. Just search for "source", mark it and hit apply!
Then follow thouroughly the HOWTO provided by Nvidia and you should be set.

Sorry iam german and try to recover what you said, 2 be sure i understand u
So the drivers are running on ur Linspire Mashine ?!

Iam sorry but i dont understand what to install closest to the kernel...

ive tried to install many kernel sources, but never a kernel source package matched..
then runing the nvidia software, but where are the src. pathes the installer wants?! (in suse its/usr/src/linux/)
so
1. I should run uname -r
2. i should install synaptic (via Apt ) (sorry newbie)

but if i remember right, the problem was that my kernel was a 2.6.10 (example) and the only source was kernel-source-2.6.10-i386 and the system didnt take it as a source package...

So Sorry i dont wanna go on ur nerves, but can u please make it more detailed in th 1 2 3 stylw, for the stupid german boy

@ this time using Suse again, but if i uderstand completly what to do, i will try next morning !

thanks benny

Well, thats a match.

Well, I myself own a Geforce FX, so have installed nvidia drivers without a problem many times. But I'm not familiar with Linspire.
You can specify the location of the kernel source tree to the nvidia driver installer manually. By default one of the places it looks is /usr/src/kernel_version_no.
You can also create a symbolic link named linux at /usr/src that point to the kernel source tree wherever it is installed. The nvidia installer should work fine.

Its like ive Said, its absolutly Debian so where is the location of the source tree, so that i can create a sysmbolic link or specifiy it with --kernel-source-path=/xX/xX/xX/
because i dont know the kernel source path ! :-(

so first i install that matching kernel source..
Need i the kernel Headers?
then i start the installer and specify the source path...but wheres the source path, like in suse /usr/src/linux/

I'm not familiar with debian either. But the source tree should be in /usr/src/.... if you didn't manually specifed other locations. Firs of all, To have the source you have to have the kernel source packages installed. If you have installed it already thats OK. Check the packages installed.
If its not installed, download the source package for your running kernel version and then install it.
Also, youinstallation cd may contain kernel source package already, check with the package manager tool that comes with debian and install it from there.

OK Guys heres More Detailed, what the installer says .-..Ive found the Kernel-Sources on the Linspire cd, an installed an untard them...

The message is still the same :

If ure running a 2.6 Kernel, use the matching kernel-sources, if it is so check ur configuration, specify the output directory
using "kbuild_output" or the "0" Kbuild parameter, specify it with the sysconf environment or specifiy
it in Nvidia installer Command line !

So thats what he want, my question, what want he ?

The kernel source is exactly matching,. in Numer an Name, so its right, what to specify or Configure?

Maybe s.o knows that, giong to work now, looking here again in 6 hours, dont let me hang

In my case, I had the same output because It was looking for the sources somewhere else. You can specify the source directory using a PATH variable thru the command line.
Are you sure you're executing the Nvidia installer at the correct runlevel?
As for the doc here it is

Best luck,

Give the nvidia installer the path where you extracted the kernel source tree. Where did you untar it?

thats where you've done wrong. Without saying more about it, plzz follow the belows instructions.

browse to the directory where you've untared the kernel source and then run "pwd" an post the output here.
Or, untar the kernel source tree immidiately inside /usr/src/linux. I mean the usr/src/linux should contain the contents of the archive. It shoud not contain another folder like you said kernel-source-2.6.10.
The /usr/src/linux folder should contain whats inside the kernel-source-2.6.10 but not the kernel-2.6.10 folder itself. Got it?
