Question Linmodem Driver?

I am a Linux Newbie and totally unfamiliar with how to use it.I have managed to install Mandrake 9.2 mainly because it did most of it itself -
My problem now is that I have an XP with a LUCENT/AGERE WinModem V2
The string that I finally found for it is
PNP_DF PCI\VEN_11C1 & DEV_044C &Subsys_044C11C & REV_02\3&61AAA01&0&58
I have searched around and found and downloaded a file called $CHICAGO$ for a Lucent Win Modem with the line included for
%Modem1% = Modem_PNP_DF , PCI\VEN_11C1&DEV_044C (no Subsys on line) from Lucent Technologies Copywright 1997.
Q.- Is this the right driver?
Q.- Is it even a Linux driver?

If so,how can I install it into Linux and make it work?

Remembering that I need to be told very slowly with lots of hand gestures
and simple words.....

Can't get on the Net without it

Try the scanModem tool, it tells you what installer you need
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/#scanmodem

I can't really help you out anymore than that because I've been workin on mine off and on for a while and been very unsuccessful.

Good Luck!!

so far,so good

OK,so far I have downloaded (into Winny) a file called-
LTModem - KV 2.4.22 10MDK -8.26a9-1.i586 RPM
Kv would be Kernal number (same as mine)
10MDK would be Mandrake 10 (mine is 9.2) didn't think 10 was out yet!
If this is going to work I now have to get it into Linux and get the Modem to use it and I don't have much clues as to how???
Any help much appreciated......

you are sorta right, sorta wrong
the kernel version is
2.4.22-10mdk

- this is kernel version 2.4.22 - with the 10th mandrake build

check what kernel version you have by typing:
uname -r

- it will be something like this - don't worry if it is 2.4.22-10mdksmp or similar - the smp is for "Symmetic Multiple Processors" - and this is if you have a Pentium 4 with HT or if you actually have a multi processor system..

as to how to use it - just type (as root) - to be root as a normal user type:
su -

then once you are root type:
rpm -ivh LTModem - KV 2.4.22 10MDK -8.26a9-1.i586 RPM

or whatever the .rpm file is called..

however I have not used this rpm file myself so I got no idea if it will actually work..

Thank you Alex, downloaded that, put it in and it took it happily -
but on checking it via root it still says I don't have a modem!
Mind you scanmodem wanted an i686 but all I found was an i586,which it thought was 2nd best choice.....
what else can I do or what haven't I done?

Hi jcap

Im a fellow kiwi newbie and I ended up using the exact same rpm on Mandrake.
The trick is to read the bottom of the output from the RPM:

If not familar with the ltmodem drivers, run the interactive CHECKOUT utility by executing: /usr/share/doc/ltmodem-kv_2.4.22_10mdk-8.26a9/utils/checkout

Run this script through a Terminal Konsole and this should get you going hopefully.
You will probably need to go and load KPPP if you havent already, and then you can enter your ISP/modem details in there.

PS I found this PCWorld article useful as well.

Cheers
