Linksys WMP54G essid won't set

Any ideas on why the essid won't set. There also is no device node in the /dev directory, but ifconfig and iwcnofig seem to think it exists. I'm going to buy a new card today to make sure it isn't the card and see what happens. If you have experienced and solved this problem please tell me how you did it. Thank you.

Is your essid hidden? What wireless card/driver are you using? And are you trying to use KNetwork Manager to connect? (I know from painful experience that there appears to be a problem with the latest (?) KNetworkManager connecting to hidden networks...)
