Linksys PCMCIA wireless card problem

Hi, newbie here, I've recently installed Kubuntu on an old Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop. The PCMCIA card - a Linksys WPC55G ver. 2 - does not work. The power light does not come on. In all installs of (K)Ubuntu I have done on other laptops, similar cards were detected and configured by the installer.

Here's the relevent output:
Code:

$ sudo cardmgr
cardmgr[26157]: open_sock(socket0) failed: Device or resource busy
cardmgr[26157]: another cardmgr is already running?

then
Code:

$ cardctl config
Socket 0:
  not configured
Socket 1:
  Vcc 3.3V  Vppl 3.3V  Vpp2 3.3V
  interface type is "cardbus"
  irq 11 [exclusive] [level]
  function 0:

and then:
Code:

$ cardctl ident
Socket 0:
  no product info available
  manfid: 0xf7ff, 0xfe5b

I also ran cardinfo. Socket 1 (the one my card is in) is reading "empty", however the "CD", "VCC" and "VPP" parts of the display are flagged, and a lowercase b appears to the right of "IRQ".

I'll be happy to post more info if anyone can help.
