LInix for Dell Inspiron 5100

I have a dell inspiron 5100 and would like to turn this into a linux machine. Does anyone have experience running Red Hat Enterprise 5Desktop on this model? Or would you suggest a different Linux? Thanks, Pat

one of my main reasons for installing this would be to use it to distribute software across a WAN. I have software CDs that I have to distribute to various unix platforms and it seems like it would be easier to do this if I put them all on my 500gb WD Book and then use Rsync to copy them to various systems as needed for installs. So support of Rsync and my USB connected Book would be important.
