Lindows PC from Walmart - worth it?

I'm looking to get a cheapo PC to replace an old fart that i'm running so that I use it in my test lab. It's the $199 and change one from Walmart with like 128MB of RAM, and like a 10GB hard drive.

Has anyone bought this thing and it is expandable at all? I'm probably just gonna wipe off Lindows and use it to test other distributions for my home lab.

From the review I read in Maximum PC, I would say avoid it. They are not upgradable. They use a motherboard the size of a cd case, with only one expansion slot if I remember correctly. If you only type emails and the like it may be fine, but other than that I have heard they are junk. And it may just be my own bias but why would anyone want Lindows?

I'm looking to add a cheapo test box (preferably under $300) for Linux, any other suggestions? I prefer something above 800Mhz if possible.

i think those boxen run the via eden/epia boards, with c3 processors, a 1000mhz c3 is ~ the same performance as a 600mhz p3, so they are pretty naff for anything demanding. just buy second hand and put it together yourself, much cheaper, and better spec,

Check out ebay, they normally have some 500-800 mhz systems for cheap. A little risky though.

I have purchased several "barebones" machines from ebay, and added what I felt would sell and have had no problems with any of them. I am preferential to AMD though but food for thought I just picked up an XP1800+ and an XP2400+ both for less than $150.00 not including the shipping.

If you need just the CPU end, w/out monitor and K/B & mouse, I can build you one for around $300 total. I have a distributor where I can get new parts. No used or grey market parts...all new.

Acutally, I can get whatever you want or need.

Do you have the OS? I have redhat 8.0 right now. I can install that too.

Let me know,

Vince

Just roll your own. You should be able to do it for around than $300, easily.
