LG combo drive in Mandrake 9.1 ?

I've recently installed Mandrake 9.1 in my PC. I noticed that my LG GCC-4521B combo drive (secondary master IDE) was listed as /dev/sd0. Is this normal?

I reinstalled the OS, and found out that the drive was recognized as /dev/hdc when loading the installer. How can this happen?

The drive can read CDs, but I haven't tried to read DVDs or burn CDs (kinda worried of admaging the drive).

If you have a 2.4 kernel, there is a 'hdc=ide-scsi' entry in the lilo append line. This is so that programs like k3b will work burning cds.

The issue with some LG cdroms is with Mandrake 9.2 only on read only cdroms. LG used the 'reset' command for cd-burners to signal the drive to load in new firmware. This command works normally for cd burners.
