I have the z52 and Mandrake 8.2...

If you are using CUPS, you need to go into the CUPS www printer manager. Once you do, you can change settings. It's pretty intuitive. You can set the dot resolution higher and the opacity higher as well, as well as tell it to default to Black and White printing, etc.

Find it in the menu structure under printing (If forget exactly where, search around for it a little).

You might have trouble logging onto CUPS (probably a permissions problem if it exists). In that case you need to supply the root password to proceed. Occasionally, you get an error message that tells you that port 631 is not available. That one's harder to fix.

but can you tell me what driver you used to print, and this printer is new to me(its my sisters) will their be any problem with the printer having a seperate cartiradge for black and another seperate cartridge for color?

Just plug it into the USB port (it has hot-plugging support, so it doesn't even have to be plugged in until you want to use it), launch the www CUPS admin program, select add printers, let it look for the z52, and then after it found it, modify the settings so that it does what you want.

I think there is an app from lexmark to set the adjustment on the two print-heads... I never use color on that printer though, don't even have a color cartridge anymore.
