Lexmark z33 - no usb support

I downloaded the latest drivers for my lexmark z33, the format is an auto-unpacking executable, but the after accepting the license the installer quits with this message:
"no usb support was found in your kernel".
I'm running a 2.4.23 kernel with the usb support built-in and the usb printer support compiled as a module...
even modprobing the module doesn't solve the installer problem... anybody had this problem before?

Where did you get this installer from?
And the output of "lsusb" (as root) would be good too.

Maranza 01-19-2004 03:41 AM

the drivers were downloaded from the lexmark website.

I deactivated "preliminary usb filesystem" in the kernel so i don't have /proc/bus/usb
but i do have usb support... maybe the installer checks for it and thinks that i don't have usb support?

A link to the drivers would be good, and you should reactivate /proc/bus/usb as a lot of drivers need it.

Maranza 01-19-2004 04:35 AM

the drivers are on the official lexmark site... nothing fancy. Version 1.0.3 for the Lexmark z33.
www.lexmark.com and follow some links

sigh... another kernel recompilation :-(
do you think it should solve the problem?

I don't know, I'm willing to have a look at these alleged drivers from lexmark (not a company known for their linux support), but I'm not going to go looking for them on lexmarks web site.

Maranza 01-19-2004 06:43 AM

ok i surrender... here's the link: ftp://ftp.lexmark-europe.com/pub/sup...jlz33le.tar.gz

anyway you didn't have to search for them. Just lexmark.com -> drivers -> z33 -> download
i didn't post the link before because it was very simple getting to the drivers page.

i'm not really using the english version but the driver is the same.

I got a server time out on that driver link, but I have a couple for you to look at - the news is not good I'm afraid.......
Linuxprinting.org have this page about the Z23, and this page about the company that makes the Z23.

Maranza 01-19-2004 08:06 AM

they don't look like bad news... at least someone else has got this pile of junk working.
i'll recompile the kernel when i have some time

Aussie 01-19-2004 04:25 PM

The say this on the Z23 page,
Quote:

Color inkjet printer, max. 1200x1200 dpi, this is a Paperweight
And you think thats not bad?

Maranza 01-19-2004 04:48 PM

i think that means there are no working open source drivers. But the proprietary drivers are on the lexmark site and it looks like some people have got them working... i'll have a look at that when i have more time...
also i remember i got the printer running on an old mdk 9.1 installation

The solution is the kernel version.

Hi, it's pretty normal to get it working on older systems... If you look on lexmark's website, y'oull see that it's for damn old distribution... I was testing it on redhat 7.3.. it works pretty well... So I jus tried to upgrade to rh 9.0... my printer still working on 9.0... I think it's working on old kernel... maybe like 2.4 to 2.4.18 ... It's the "range" of kernels that it might be the solution... Why isn't working above that... who knows?

For deb users, it's working on an old potato box ;) So if someone want to test what I'm talking about, let me know :o)
