A simple question really, has anyone managed to get the X5150 working under Linux?
(I've been offered one as a birthday present, but before I actually go for this model as opposed to something else I thought it might be an idea to check it would actually work on my PC (Mandrake 9.2) )
Unfortunately the 5150 isn't even mentioned, but they do say that Lexmark printers have generally poor support under Linux, so i'm gonna have a look at some other makes instead.
I'm having a simililar problem. Inquiries to Lexmark got the reply that probably not. Number of Lexmark's listed in SUSE printer list, but not sure they all work. I am looking at H-P now. Had a long call yesterday with a techie there and got a list of three (550, 6122, 5650) plus the info that the PhotoSmart 7260 would also work. In addition he said that any of the H-P's with a parallel connection (or is it serial) would work
yes, h-p is reasonably safe - i can confirm success with a deskjet 930c and a deskjet 5550c.
cups drivers are available for both the above, and numerous others. one word of caution though - if you're into graphics, and use 'the gimp', do check that printer will work satisfactorily with the gimp-print plug-in.
h-p printers will work, but for the models above, the gimp-print plug-in will only give a maximum resolution of 600dpi (although the 5550c has paper-specific auto resolution adjustment, and it does seem to work well).
if graphics are your main interest, you might be better off with an epson - these are very well supported by gimp, as well as cups, and results are allegedly extremely good, although i have no personal experience.
