Lexmark MD2236ADW

Hi Everyone

I have this scanner. I am running Debian and trying to use the "document scanner" application.

The scanner is found but no matter what settings I try, I always get this error:
"document feeder empty"

This also happens when I set it to flatbed.

Any ideas, I am can't figure this out-Patrick

I assume that you're using the non-free scanner driver from Lexmark? You may need to get support from the vendor.

Perhaps some limitation with the SANE driver in use. Here is a SANE model/driver list for Lexmark...

http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-LEXMARK

What do the following commands report?
Code:
sane-find-scanner
Code:
scanimage -L

Thanks, I had to run this as root, it found my printer but not my scanner:

# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04f9 [Brother], product=0x0077 [HL-L5000D series]) at libusb:004:022
could not fetch string descriptor: Pipe error
could not fetch string descriptor: Pipe error
# Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

# Not checking for parallel port scanners.

# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
# can't be detected by this program.

and now the second command, it found it:

scanimage -L
device `escl:https://192.168.1.4:443' is a Lexmark MB2236adw flatbed scanner

You should enclose such output within [code]...[/code] tags. (Refer to the '#' button in the advanced forum editor.)

I'm not certain that the sane-escl driver is appropriate for this model.

More info about this driver you can read...
Code:
man sane-escl

Thanks. Here is the output, I think you are right, I don't see anything about Lexmark at all:
<output>

NAME
sane-escl - SANE backend for eSCL scanners

DESCRIPTION
The sane-escl library implements a SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) backend that provides access to eSCL protocol scanners.

Currently, the following models work with this backend (This list is not exhaustive):

BROTHER DCP-L2530
CANON IR C3520
CANON PIXMA TS3100, TS3150, TS3300, TS3151, TS3350, TS3351,
CANON PIXMA TS3352, TS6150, TS8050, TS9100, TR4540, TR8500,
CANON PIXMA TR8520
EPSON ET3740, ET4750
HP LASERJET MFP M28W, OFFICEJET 4630, OFFICEJET PRO 8610
RICOH SP3710S
XEROX VERSALINK C7220

The "escl" backend for SANE supports AirScan/eSCL devices that announce themselves on mDNS as _uscan._utcp or _uscans._utcp. If the device is available, the "escl" backend re‐
covers these capacities. The user configures and starts scanning. A list of devices that use the eSCL protocol can be found at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201311. While
these devices are expected to work, your mileage may vary.

FILES
/etc/sane.d/escl.conf
The backend configuration file.

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane/libsane-escl.a
The static library implementing this backend.

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane/libsane-escl.so
The shared library implementing this backend (present on systems that support dynamic loading).

ENVIRONMENT
SANE_DEBUG_ESCL
If the library was compiled with debug support enabled, this environment variable controls the debug level for this backend. E.g., a value of 128 requests all debug out‐
put to be printed. Smaller levels reduce verbosity.

SEE ALSO
sane(7), scanimage(1), xscanimage(1), xsane(1)

Here is another piece of the puzzle.

I have both DSL and Cable internet. I unplugged my Debian box from DSL and used cable. I plugged the scanner in with a USB cable and now, no scanner is found. I am guessing that USB is the "gold standard" here and it should work even when wireless doesn't.

You are probably right about the wrong driver and maybe it is not working well with wireless. I guess I will have to install the Lexmark driver

Thanks very much

Some scanners use a non-open protocol, so this is probably what id biting you and will have to use their software.

Now that you have the scanner working as a USB-connected device, please check the SANE backend (driver) in use again

Code:
scanimage -L
It may still be possible to edit the relevant config file in /etc/sane.d/ for use within your network environment.

With just usb nothing is found with scanimage -L

Let me try loading a different distro. Ubuntu is not my favourite but it sometimes has better support, thanks again for all your time

Sorry, I misread your post #8. Now I understand that no scanner was found. That doesn't surprise me. The choice of distro won't make a difference here. Instead I recommend that you install the vendor drivers. They can be found here...

Thanks again. I have it working with gscan2pdf now. I had to use the closed source drivers. I have it on another disk. I will have to shutdown and plug the other hard drive in but at least it is working and my normal drive with linux is not contaminated with closed source crap.
