Question LCD Screens ~ Dangerous under heavy usage?

I was poking around at Staples for a monitor cable and an incomprehensible sales clerk started babbling about LCD screens and cables, and I thought I heard him say that their LCD screens burn out all the time. Either that, or that the cables went all the time. I'm a visual weenie, and I like my screensavers. I know CRT monitors are nearly impossible to burnout anymore, but is this still the case with LCD's? As any LCD owner knows my monitor was wayyyyy too expensive to be reckless. Anybody know?

I remember reading somewhere that the backlight in LCD monitors tends to be the first thing to go. I'm not claiming to be an expert in this, like I said I read that somewhere.

I'm sure a little googling will turn up more info.

I've heard the same problem with LCD televisions and plasma TV's as well (we're shopping around for one of those right now). Except the LCD bulb is about 20 bucks where the plasma bulb + the installation cost is more than the TV itself. My main concern is getting a nice big burn spot on the screen.

Fluorescent tubes last a long time and are cheap, but they are made of glass and break easily. I heard NEC is working on newer models (still in the prototype stage) that use LEDs instead. They're virtually indestructible, consume even less power and produce better colors.

well... lets ditch the computer and go back to the good old typewriter... coz there is no danger of anything burning out and as long as you can get the ribbon well it'll last for a v v long time...

When I read the documentation on my LCD it says the average life expectancy is 30,000 hours or 3.42 years of being constantly on. Since I turn mine off at night/when I am not in my office I use it about 8 hours a day max. At that rate mine will last about 10 years according to there stats. I am pretty sure I won't still have it 10 years from now so that is ok by me.

Sounds like powersave isn't terribly painful to it then ~ I just read my box and manual; there was no info on it's life expectancy. It's a Viewsonic though ~ And I paid alot for it. It damn well better last.
