Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Laptop Upgrade

I am thinking about upgrading my 7 y/o laptop from win2k to Mint. In the issues that I have had with linux installs it has always been the video cards that I have issues with. I also never work on laptops and due to that issue have reservations upgrading.

Here is the list of built-in hardware...

Video: Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family
Sound: Sigma Tel
Wireless: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

Are these compatible with linux?

Thanks
K

Generally, almost anything Intel is Linux compatible; I have successfully used Linux on computers with that video chipset. Here's what Intel says about the wireless.

I can't seem to find much useful info on the sound card.

Why not boot the Mint CD in Live Mode and test? That should provide a lot of information.

Given that the computer is seven years old, there is a very good chance that any compatibility issues have been resolved.

There should be no problem with compatibility. Given that this machine is 7 years old it may be that it will not fulfill the system-requirements for modern distros with heavy desktop environments. Which CPU do you have and how much RAM?
