Laptop Trackpad Settings
Laptop: Dell Vostro 5590
OS: Linux Mint Mate
When I go into System > Preferences > Hardware > Mouse, the Touchpad settings don't seem to work. For example, I set it to interpret a two-finger click to mean middle-click, but it actually does right-click. Also, any single click is interpreted as left-click, even if it happens in the right-click area, and then right-click is only accessible through two-finger clicking.
I suspect the computer is using a different driver that has its own settings somewhere, but I don't know how to find where that is.

Run the commands mentioned there to provide definitive hardware/driver/configuration information here.

Thanks for supplying that info. Strangely detected as both a mouse and touchpad....
Code:
DELL095A:00 06CB:CDD6 Mouse id=10 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ PS/2 Generic Mouse id=15 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ DELL095A:00 06CB:CDD6 Touchpad id=11 [slave pointer (2)]
Anyway, other than a few other quirks reported in the xorg.conf, I didn't really note any obvious issues.
I'm not a MATE desktop user, so I'm not sure why the touchpad configuration doesn't work as expected, but it may be down to libinput itself. Also check out libinput-gestures perhaps. It seems promising.
A couple of libinput-gesture threads that may be of interest...

Another point that might be relevant: I just got this computer about 4 months ago, and I installed Linux Mint 18.3, but it didn't have the right drivers for the touchpad, wifi, or speakers. After many hours of Google detective work, I decided to just back up my home folder and install Mint 20 fresh, and it did indeed have the drivers. This is the first time in 14 years I got a laptop brand-new instead of second-hand -- I suspect that it being so new means there are quirks in it that the Linux software community haven't had the time to find and resolve just yet.

The hardware driver for such devices is built in to the kernel, so that explains why moving to a more recent distro version was required to support the new hardware. From a Wayland or X11 perspective there is the libinput library that interacts with them and the input devices handled by the kernel. So, it's not really a Mint issue as such, but perhaps an upstream issue that needs reporting.
