laptop only works with X.org if i switch between different outputs. REALLY wierd.
i have tried for a while to get this sorted on ubuntuforums.org, as i am using xubuntu but unfortunately no one there is able to help me.
here is the thread which i have created there (altho that thread is now dead and burried so please reply here)
basically, the only way i can get my laptop (toshiba satellite 3000x4) to work with x.org is to set the colour depth down to 16 (even tho it is apparently capable of 24) and then after it loads up most of the way, i plug in an external monitor and switch to the monitor, then back to the laptop screen.
one thing of significance is that no matter how long i leave it, it never finishes loading the logon manager (and you dont hear the noise it makes when the logon manager is reached) *until* i have done the "switch the display" trick. so it obviously is getting stuck somewhere... and switching the output helps it get over this hang point.
read the other thread (not too long, dont worry) to see what i have tried
thank you very *very* much to whoever can help.

Maybe something weird is going on with hardware detection? It's very mysterious.

Hi,
Can you post X server log and other logs? Otherwise, our penguins have no clue.

I am not sure if errors with /dev/wacom is related to your penguin's disease. But, these are the only ones suspicious.
By the way, do you have Xorg.1.log ?

no i dont have a .1.log
ill try commenting out those devices in xorg.conf but i dont hold out much hope for it.
i wish someone could tell me how to set composite to be disabled by default... so i could see if that xcomposite error message is to do with it
