Laptop monitor
 

Hello, my laptop monitor has been detected as unknown. I did not see it listed anywhere during installation. Current resolution is no more than 800 x 600. Every time I try to raise it, it reverts back to lower dpi.

Everything else if fine.

Can anyone help? I am using Red Hat 9.

with laptops and linux, you can only use one setting, which is the max resolution of your laptop. otherwise it will be blurry.

find the max resolution that your laptop can take (google) and put it in your display settings.

Settings -> Display

this is my way change the display settings: i go to the terminal as root and then i find out the redhat program to change the display settings by typing:

su -
redhat [TAB] [TAB]

[TAB] will autocomplete the name of the program (you will get a few). look to see what you get and choose the right program (it will be something like redhat-config-display i don't remember).

if that doesn't work, you need to modify the file found at:

/etc/X11/XF86Config

and put the max resolution where ever you see something like "1600x1200" "800x600"

better yet, go to linux laptop.org and find a copy of the XF86Config for your laptop

I just got done installing the personal edition of Suse 9.2 - all went well until I was asked to adjust my monitor. I puzzed around and the image went blurry for a while than froze. Now when I try booting all I get is a black screen. I can boot into failsafe, unfortunately don't know how to fix it from there.

Any thoughts? Very New to Linux, so please keep it simple if possible. Thanks
