Laptop LCD Video Connector Tape?

Recently, my dad cracked the lcd screen in his laptop (fell off his bed). Having replaced them before, he replaced this one with a few minor problems. The video connector was stubborn and had to be in there just right. Well, the connector continued to fall out so he put some gorilla tape on it to hold it in. Seemed like a good idea. Except that a little later on his laptop screen went dead and started to smoke. We think that it's the gorilla tape. So the question is what kind of tape SHOULD he use to keep the connector in place. The connector did have some tape it originally, but once we peeled it off so many times it lost its stickiness. His Laptop is an Acer Aspire 6930 (renowned for its screen fragility)

Gorilla Tape ate my laptop display

I'd guess that perhaps gorilla tape either

(1) might be conductive; tho nothing should have been exposed; or

(2) it has nothing to do with it.

Just to be safe, use "Black Electrical Tape" (which doesn't even have to be black, but that's the classic name for it.

I would be inclined to squire a little hot melt glue somewhere to hold something in place - as long as it didn't have to flex (much). A good hold, yet can be peeled off, and has a little flex. Hot melt glue guns are now unbelieveably cheap if you don't yet have one and you'll find other uses for it.

I doubt it is the tape that made the notebook computer smoke. It is probably something metal that cracked off and hanged close to the motherboard. Then after a while the notebook computer got nudged and the metal dropped to the motherboard and fried it. It shows how Acer is about quality. All LCD in notebook computers are fragile except the military grade or notebook computers designed for a lot of abuse minus bullet-proof.

Gorilla tape is nothing more than extra heavy duty duct tape. There is nothing metallic in the tape.

Yeah, it turns out that the video connector got into the hinge and part of it got ripped off. He got a new video connector and put it in and just to be safe, he used electrical tape. Thanks everyone for your help
