Laptop: Internet Adapter not working

Hi Folks,
Thanks in advance for your help. Here's the deal . . .

Computer: IBM Thinkpad 600E
P2 366 MHz
294 MB PC-100 RAM

OS: Ubuntu 5.10

This being an older computer I am using a ethernet card PCI adapter for internet connection. It worked fine on this computer using SuSE 9.1. I switched to Ubuntu because SuSE runs very slow on my old laptop. Ubuntu runs great except I cannot connect to the internet. I would appreciate your help in getting the card to work. I am a newbie (only about two or three months experience with Linux (SuSE 9.3 Pro on my desktop)). Please keep that in mind when you reply (I don't know much). Thank You!

Did you search (LQ and ubuntu sites) - very unlikely you are the first to see this.
Got a copy of Knoppix ??? - if not, get one, and always keep it handy.
Boot that (it runs from the floppy only - no disk updates), and see if that connects. It will ...

Open a terminal and issue
Code:
lsmod
and see if anything looks obviously like a network driver. Else post the output here - someone will know.

Thanks syg00 for the response and information. I do have Knoppix and DSL (another Linux live cd) and they both connect to the internet with no problem. I have searched everywhere I know to search, including the IBM web site, but have not found anything that helps. I'm still learning Linux and I'm sure the problem is me. I have decided to ditch Ubuntu for the time being and go back to SuSE and see what I can stip away to make it a bit faster on the laptop. I am, at least, familiar with that. Thanks again for your input.

I'm surprised you didn't find anything - Ubuntu support seems generally pretty good.
The "lsmod" will still be useful on Suse - anywhere that the card works. Worth knowing what you need.

(did I really say "floppy" in that previous response - hopefully you knew what I meant .... )

Thanks for your continued interest, syg00. I haven't given up on Ubuntu, just getting back on familiar ground until I learn some more. I've tried several of the Linux distros and Ubuntu is the only one, thus far, that would not recognize my card. I'm sure it is me, though. Except for that, Ubuntu runs very well, crisp and fast on my old Thinkpad. It's tough being a newbie in the world of LInux! I appreciate people like you who are willing to share what they know and places like this that provide the platform. If I discover the problem or what I'm doing wrong concerning this issue I'll post it for all to see. Thanks again.
