Laptop earphone socket not working

Hiya. I have a Asus Laptop with Ubuntu 6.06 installed. Everything seems to be working fine apart from the earphone socket. I can listen to music through the laptop speakers however when I plug earphones in I get no sound from the earphones. How can I sort this problem out?

I noticed that when windows is used on this laptop the earphone sockets glows red. When linux is running the earphone socket lights are not on.

Have you checked the sound levels ?
it maybe the head phone socket is muted, I think there is a speaker icon on the menu bar in Ubuntu that you can double click on to change volume levels.
If everything looks unmuted and you are getting no joy, run
Code:
sudo lspci -v
and let us know what sound card it reports.

No the muting isnt the problem. I dont think the earphone socket is even on when Linux is running since the red light is not on.

The sound card comes up as:

Intel Corporation 82801/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
Subsystem: ASUSTek Computer Inc: Unknown device 1113
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 201
Memory at feb38000 (64bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16k)
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable

Capabilities: [70] 10 [0091]

Thanks for your help so far
