laptop DVD drive not reading CDs

Hi, I've got something quite weird. An LG dvd rom drive built for the dell inspiron 5000 laptop reads dvds, dvd+-rs, but not cds or cdrs.

Has anyone seen something like this before?
The only thing I could find on the net was a post at experts-exchange ("CDs will not work in DVD drive, but DVDs will") but, of course, this post is a "premium member only". O joy.

Anyways, I want to put suse on that laptop, but without a proper drive I would not risk it further.

Note.: the system is currently running windows 2000 without problems.

Nay, I'm saying it's on win2000 currently, but I can't install suse (or crux.. or any other) if I can't read properly

Sorry I was a bit unclear.
