Hello users, My wife's laptop dvd drive went bad and I am wondering if the replacement drive has to be from the same brand as the computer? I don't know if the connector pins in the back of the dvd drive is the same in all the laptop computers

I know it doesn't matter what brand of dvd drive to use with desktop computers.

I saw on a site that a sony dvd drive is at a pretty good price. Is it only for sony computers? My wife has a toshiba satellite computer with IDE.

Do I really need to buy the drive from toshiba or will any brand suffice?

If you are talking about a dvd drive that inserts into the laptop itself, rather than connecting with a cable, it will have to be compatible with your make & model. It is possible in some cases, if you are handy, to assemble a replacement drive into the original housing, but it's not like installing a hard drive or replacing a desktop cd/dvd drive.

I've had good luck locating replacements for specific laptops on ebay.
