Laptop doesn't have serial port for external modem

I now have a USR 5686 external 56k modem.
I went to plug it into the laptop and...no serial port. sad.gif

So i see there are RS232 to USB converters.
Is this going to work?

If not, are there any other options?

What type of laptop is it? Sometimes you can get an extension bar for your laptop that includes serial ports and plugs into a special socket on the back of your machine. I think these work transparently, although I could be wrong.

Its an HP Pavilion dv5115nr

Couldn't find an expansion bar for that laptop. Seems kind of new. Are you sure the builtin modem doesn't work?

Here's a link to some pcmcia modems that reportedly work under linux. note not everything on this page is a modem... Never used them though...
