Laptop + CRT + Linux =Chaos!

Ok so recently the screen on my laptop went and so i hooked up a CRT monitor too it. It works well enough in windows but when i try to boot up into Linux i get a whole bunch of jibberish........it looks like the pictures are there.....like i can see the boot up tux....however there are a bunch of em ripping accross the screen.......the words are unreadable and the lines seem all messed up......when i first boot up the console seems ok.....but then kernel 2.6 kicks in and trys to go to a high rez console..........thats when the maddness happens.........things are everywere and it is very hard to see any thing..............some jumble of gray lines that i know were once letters............Well im using a Dell insperiot 4150 and an Acer 1024X768 CRT monitor with it...I dont know how to boot the kernel with out it going into the high rez console....im sure that if i can get it into a useable console i can get every thing working from there.....Thanks for reading my post!

Sounds like Linux boots ok, but just doesn't seem to be able to set the screen type/geometry correctly..
I'd suggest you try letting it boot, then switch to a text console with ctrl-alt-F1 for example and see if you get a nice clean console to work with, and work your way through there to set up a new monitor. Since you didn't mention what distro you use I won't be able to get more specific. Perhaps some guru might be able to assist here too.

well im using debian woody......and I have it so it dosn't auto boot into X.....so it is in the console................its just every thing is messed up......well if some one could tell me how to boot into a low rez console i think that would be great. That would probably sove my problem.
