Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Laptop as KVM switch

I don't know if this actually exists, but is there a way to use a laptop as a KVM switch for a desktop computer without using vnc? Basically so that I could have a normal independent laptop that could also be used to control a desktop without needing a seperate keyboard/monitor? Hopefully with cross-OS functionality, ie. a Linux laptop controls a Windows Desktop without actually running any Linux software? Tell me if this makes any sense.

Here's a lousy diagram I made to show the basic idea, if it's any help.

AFAIK there is no way to connect two computers together without using some type of application.
