lan on ibm thinkpad R40


I having trouble activating my wired lan on my ibm thinkpad r40. I installed ubuntu 8.10. How can I activate my lan on my laptop, is it in the bios setup utility? also What are the commands to see what devices are labeled what and which ones are activated in the terminal?

Well, look at
Code:
ifconfig -a
To see all network devices that the kernel knows about.

You can use
Code:
ethtool -p <device name>
To identify the device. It will make it's light flash.

Start there.
