lan and sound conflicting
 

New install of RHFC1, on a HP Pavlion 6642F 533 Celeron. Compaq Netelligent 10/100 LAN card, onboard AC97 audio, Intel i810 chipset.

Problem is that I get EITHER working sound, OR working LAN. It occasionally switches on a reboot, as in right now I have working LAN, but the next time I reboot I might get working sound, but no LAN. Its always either/or, never both working at the same time. However, the LINE IN, and CD AUDIO works fine, all the time (I'm playing CDs, and have my WinTV card working thru the LINE IN port now).

I'm a newb to Linux, but not to computers. I know I need to change the I/O and/or IRQ settings for one card or the other, just don't know how to do that in Linux. I tried checking my BIOS, but there are no settings for the on board sound (only enable/disable), and there are no jumpers on the LAN card. The sound card auto detect does detect the proper card. Its just not handling the wave portion of the sounds properly.

The best way would be to copy the way windows is doing it (if you have windows on it) otherwise find some forums specific to your laptop.
The line in will work because it goes straight from the input socket to the speakers - can you record sound from the line in to a file while the sound appears to be disabled?

I would love to copy the way windows does it, but like I said in the post, I have no clue how to change the settings in Linux......

hmm... search this forum for a bit; I think you will need to modify /etc/modules.conf or /etc/modprobe.conf to include both the sound (snd_i810 or similar) and network cards.
type lspci (as root) to view the detected hardware, then lsmod do discover which modules are loaded.
Then search and ponder!!
