LaCie SAFE Mobile Hard Drives with Linux.

I have a 80GB LaCie SAFE Mobile Hard Drive

and im using the latest kubuntu ([17179569.184000] Linux version 2.6.17-10-generic (root@vernadsky) (gcc version 4.1.2 20060928 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.1-13ubuntu5)) #2 SMP Fri Oct 13 18:45:35 UTC 2006 (Ubuntu 2.6.17-10.33-generic)).

Does anyone know if its possible to use it under Linux?

Thx!

Solved.

There does not seem to be any drivers for Linux. But as soon as you plug it in, you have to wait for the top light to turn red&yellow (both colors at the same time). Then swipe your finger and if the finger print reading was successful the top light turns green permanently & the drive should be mountable. If the top light turns red, wait again for the red&yellow light and try again.

According to their documentation, maybe not. I wouldn't be suprised if they were to come up with an FUSEr module solution in the future however. Looking at their website they have released LightScribe support for Linux. You might want to send them an email or phone call to find out if Linux will be supported in the future.

Thanks chiappa for also posting your solution. I guess you replied as I was doing my research. This means I suppose that the encryption is self-contained. As a result of trying to help you I found their driver and program for my LightScribe dvd burner. So double thanks!

As an interesting note, when I looked at their RPM files that I downloaded, the prepairer listed is Hewlett Packard. Is LaCie owned by HP? Or did they simply grab HP software? Maybe a LaCie drive is used for some newer HP models and HP developed or packaged support for it.
