Lacie external firewire hd, kernel 2.6

Hello,

I have been trying to get a external lacie firewire 400 fat32 120 gb harddrive working on my mandrake 10 install with the default 2.6 kernel. I have researched the issue and have come up with one howto., on rimboy.com it works but only for the 2.4 kernel.

Eventualy I have come up with the following workarround, I boot the machine with the hd off, harddrake removes the device named sda, I reboot with it on and it adds the device sda and I can mount sda1. Since I run a dual boot system it is not very handy to keep doing this.

If I where to boot with the drive on a second time either the system hangs while mounting the drive for a while or just boot without mounting it, when I then manually mount it mount hangs again for some time or just completely hangs the system.

- My firewire pci card works good, my ipod mounts fine with it.
- When I try to format in linux native format it hangs during format, I think the lacie firmware does not like it.
- The drive functions normally on Mac OS X and Windows XP and when successfully mounted in Mandrake 10 too.
- The drive comes up in harddrake as a unknown firewire device, under the drives section it does come up as a western digital disk, sda.

I hope someone ever tried this before and knows a solution, thanks in advance for any suggestions.
