Kyocera Jax -- Can I access with Linux and the appropriate USB cable?
Hi, all. I got a Kyocera Jax cell phone through Assurance Wireless. It uses the Virgin Mobile network. I want to buy a USB cable with micro USB to hook up to the phone and see what I can see with Linux. Is this a pointless effort? I'm just wondering if I can upload pictures to it for starters. Here is some info I got from underneath the battery:
KYOCERA
10-R727A-01 JAX
MEID(D):268435459902675467
FCC ID:OVF-K33BIC04
K33BIC-4
MEID(H):A000002728D30B
Also it apparently has a Qualcomm 3G-CDMA wireless chip, which I think is not related to what I want to do. A Google search and a search of these forums returns no specific information except how to pay somebody to unlock the service provider lock so you can change service providers without changing phones -- which is also not what I want. Has anybody had success accessing and uploading data to these phones? I don't want to buy a USB cable just for this phone if it's not going to work with Linux. Just knowing if there are Linux drivers available would be a good start. I'm using Fedora 14 with kernel 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64. Thanks ahead of time.
Most phones show up as generic mass storage devices, so it should't be an issue, it would act just like a thumb drive.
Cables are cheap, it is worth a shot. If it doesn't work, you at least have a cable to let you charge it from any available USB port.
Sounds encouraging. Thanks very much, elliott678.
EDIT: I don't want to bump this thread so I'm using the edit feature to say I took your advice and bought a cable. I'll try to remember to post an update after I get the cable and see how things work out. Thanks again.

Reason: New info
Okay I got my cable which was advertised as data and charge capable. It is not recognized. "dmesg|tail", "tail /var/log/messages" and "fdisk -l" return no evidence of the phone. But it does work as a charger. So if anybody knows of drivers I can download and compile please let me know. It's a Kyocera Jax. More info in my first post. Thanks.

Reason: mistake
Then it is not communicating with the computer at all, even if Linux had no idea what to do with it, it would still be able to identify that it was plugged in.
Are there any setting in the menus that might allow it to communicate with a computer? Anything like MSC mode or anything to do with USB?
There isn't a lot of information out there on the phone, even the user manual is useless.

No, there isn't. I've looked through everything in the menus and nothing at all about USB or MSC. But thanks for the help! I did find one site that provided a link for windows drivers but none for Linux.
I realize this is a linux forum, but I've spent hours searching the internet for a way to access this phone to no avail, do you think you could share your link to the windows drivers?
